Mediterranean Diet: A Powerful Weapon Against Liver Disease
A new study has contributed to the long list of health advantages of the Mediterranean diet, proposing that it might help avoid metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
The diet, centered on vegetables, olive oil, fish, and lower consumption of red meat and dairy products, has produced early indications in healing markers related to inflammation of the liver and its function in MASLD patients.
As reported by Science Alert, referring to research published in the journal Nutrients, MASLD occurs in almost one-third of the world’s population because of too much fat buildup in the liver. This condition could go on to develop into chronic inflammation, fibrosis or, in the worst-case scenario, liver cancer. MASLD is also highly related to obesity and type 2 diabetes.
The research, conducted by an investigation team at the University of Rovira i Virgili in Spain, evaluated 13 clinical trials with 926 MASLD patients. It determined the impact of the Mediterranean diet pattern, in combination with intermittent fasting methods, on different health indicators.
Results showed that the combined strategy can aid weight loss, increase blood glucose values and lower inflammation. There were early signs of enhanced liver function. The researchers, however, recommended long-term studies to elucidate the long-term efficacy of these diets in controlling MASLD.
Even though liver-specific results are still few, available evidence indicates that the Mediterranean diet may be a supporting intervention in preventing or minimising MASLD.
The eating pattern is made up mainly of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, olive oil, fish and poultry, with lower consumption of processed food, sweets and red meat. Its established benefits for overall health and prevention of chronic diseases are supported by these new data, with a possible additional role in liver health.
